5 of the Easiest Houseplants to Maintain

Plants are not just good for the environment; they also have a positive effect on our mood and health. Plants have been shown to significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels, increase feelings of well-being, and improve concentration. They also help to purify the air.

“But I’m not very good at keeping my plants alive.”

You are not alone. We hear this a lot! The good news is there are so many houseplants that are easy to keep alive.

1. ZZ Plant

The ZZ plant is another easy-to-grow, low-maintenance indoor plant that tolerates low light and doesn’t require much watering. In fact, during the winter months, it remains green even when it becomes dormant during the winter months when it doesn’t need to be watered at all! However, during periods of active growth, it will require weekly watering. If you notice the leaves of your zz plant are starting to turn yellow, it’s an indication you could be over-watering your plant. Be sure to check the soil moisture between waterings.

Guide to ZZ Plant

  • The ZZ plant thrives in moderate to low-lighted areas.
  • Prefers little water (should only be watered when the soil is dry).
  • Can grow 2-3 feet tall when fully mature.

2. Peace Lily

Ideal for indoors and outdoors, peace lilies are a hearty plant that’s easy to maintain in both your home and office. Contrary to popular belief, and as its name suggests, a peace lily isn’t a lily at all. It’s actually a form of Araceae, which is a flowering plant that bears a striking resemblance to lilies.

To keep your peace lily thriving, plant it in a wide-based pot with adequate drainage and fill it with organic soil. Place your pot in an area that receives indirect sunlight and maintain a temperature between 70°F and 80°F. If your peace lily starts to look droopy, it needs some water. Avoid letting the soil dry between waterings or your plant could develop rot around its roots.

Guide to Peace Lily Plant Care

  • Peace lily plants thrive in moist and humid environments.
  • Peace lily plants love partially shaded areas or low-light spaces.
  • Water your plant every other day or before the soil dries out.
  • Keep your peace lily away from animals and children (as they are mildly toxic when ingested).

3. Monstera Plant

If you lack a green thumb, you can’t go wrong with a dependable monstera plant. Monsteras tend to thrive in most indoor environments, can grow to be very large, and often become a focal point for your home or office. Best of all, their soil can dry out most of the way (up to 75%) and they will keep growing. So, if you tend to forget to water your plants, the monstera is for you. For the best growth and biggest leaves, be sure to place your plant in bright or indirect light, such as near a window. We also recommend dusting your leaves to keep them shiny and clean.

Guide to Monstera Plant Care

  • Water your monstera once a week (allowing the soil to dry out between waterings).
  • Monstera plants can tolerate bright light, but they thrive when placed away from direct sunlight.
  • Monstera plants love their leaves to be misted every once in and while.

4. Parlor Palm

Commonly referred to as little parlor palms, the chamaedorea elegans is one of the most dependable and durable houseplants around. Not only is it easy to keep alive, but it also adds a great decorative accent to your space.

Guide to Parlor Palm

  • Prefers a semi-shaded area away from direct light.
  • Thrives in rooms with average humidity.
  • Water weekly and keep the soil moist for optimal growth (moist but not overly watered).
  • You can remove wilted parts of leaves with scissors without harming the plant.
